The House Extensions Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)

(Please note this document title has changed – it is referred to in the Local Development Scheme (May 09) as Residential Extensions SPD)

The House Extensions Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) is one of a number of supplementary planning documents being produced by Slough Borough Council. Once adopted it will form part of the Local Development Framework and principally support the implementation of Core Strategy Policy 8 (sustainability and the environment). It may also be used to support the implementation of Saved Policies H14, H15, EN1, EN2, and T2 of the Slough Local Plan (2004), until such time as they are replaced by policies in other Development Plan Documents.

The SPD tries to find a balance between allowing house owners to extend their properties with the longer term requirement to protect both the character and appearance of existing houses and their surroundings, and residential amenity for existing and future occupiers. During production the SPD should be read in conjunction with the accompanying Sustainability Appraisal.

The SPD, once adopted, will assist the development control process for house extensions through giving weight to the decision making process set out within them. This will give more certainty and clarity to applicants and agents proposing and submitting householder applications, and help improve the transparency and consistency of decision making.
